Hillsborough is a special place — a small town that is unique. Life is connected to neighbors, to the land and to the past. For the past seven years, students from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke have been coming to Hillsborough each spring for the class Small Town USA. Each student has chosen his or her own project based on personal interests. He or she has spent the semester documenting that project.
Hillsborough has opened its arms to these students. It’s been a time of learning, a time of discovery and a time of growth. They came here to learn about photography, but the people of Hillsborough have taught them about life — the connectedness in a small town. They’ve experienced first hand how your life is different in a small town, and at times, more meaningful.
Service Learning at Duke and the Hillsborough Tourism Board have provided grants to fund this website. Students provided all final prints and digital files to the town as a gift.
